Lamborghini has introduced a four-day working week for factory staff in Italy, who will benefit from reduced hours and higher pay.
The luxury carmaker will roll out the initiative after striking a deal with union chiefs, who hailed the agreement as “historic”.
Hours are often cut on car assembly lines when demand drops but introducing fewer hours for higher pay is understood to be a first for a European carmaker.
Under the terms of the deal, shift workers at Lamborghini’s flagship factory near Bologna will benefit from at least two four-day weeks a month depending on their shift pattern.
Employees will also be paid larger bonuses as part of the negotiations between unions and Lamborghini-owner Volkswagen.
It comes as four-day weeks gain traction among companies in the UK and Europe, which are striving to boost productivity while reducing working hours.
In February, 56 out of 61 companies which took part in a four-day week trial in the UK, with 18 firms promising to keep the initiative permanently.
Participants in the trial reported lower stress levels while productivity was unaffected.
Essilorluxottica, which owns glasses brands such as Ray-Ban and Oakley, said last week it would run a four-day week trial with factory employees following a deal with unions.
Lamborghini’s agreement has been struck after the business recently posted record results for the first nine months of the year, as turnover exceeded €2bn from 7,744 cars made.
The carmaker has seen a surge in demand for its two internal combustion-engined models, including the £194,169 Urus SUV and the £235,110 Huracan, which are sold out until next year.
Like other carmakers, Lamborghini is working towards a move away from petrol and diesel models, with plans to introduce its first electric supercar by 2028.
Umberto Tossini, chief people officer at Lamborghini said: “The innovative shift system that we have developed guarantees to increase the capacity of our plants to meet demand from the growing number of customers we have worldwide.
“At the same time, these innovations meet people’s expectations with working hours that allow everyone to recover the physical and mental energies necessary for general well-being.“
