The Cincinnati Bengals are still among the top teams in the league in terms of available cap space. The money is there if they want to snag one of the several impactful free agents still on the board.
With a few holes on the roster, the team could look to add former Denver Broncos and Tennessee Titans defensive Jurrell Casey. Casey spent last season with the Broncos, recording 14 tackles and three passes defended in three games.
Listed as an “under-the-radar” free agent, Bleacher Reports claims that the Bengals may be the “best fit” for Casey. Here’s an excerpt of what Bleacher Report’s Chris Roling wrote.
“A rebuilding team with defensive issues like the Cincinnati Bengals would be a great fit to let Casey loose on a rotational snap count during a one-year, prove-it pact,” Roling wrote.
While it might have seemed like we disagreed, Roling isn’t wrong here. Spending a low-value contract on a player that is coming off a horrible season following five consecutive Pro Bowl appearances is smart for the Bengals.
Casey stands 6-foot-1 and weighs 305 pounds. Especially with D.J. Reader coming off an injury, it may be smart to get a player that’s spent time on the both interior and exterior of the line.
Coming into last season, Casey recorded seven-straight seasons of at least five sacks. He also totaled over 40 tackles and double-figure quarterback hits as well. His resume, while recently not looking great, is impressive overall.
The Bengals will have Reader, Trey Hendrickson, Sam Hubbard, and others manning the line, but injuries happen, as the team has seen in each of the last few seasons. Having a player like Casey to use sparingly and fill in when needed could change the course of the season.
A former third-round pick of the Titans, it would be smart to add Casey to the team with offseason workouts heating up.
