Josh Heupel continued his mission to improve the Tennessee Vols‘ roster on Thursday by landing Michigan transfer linebacker William Mohan.

Heupel has now added six players to Tennessee’s roster via the transfer portal.
Mohan, 6-foot-1/205 lbs from Brooklyn, NY, was rated as a three-star linebacker during the 2020 recruiting cycle.
The New York native signed with Michigan over offers from Ohio State, Penn State, Mississippi State, Tennessee, Miami, and Pittsburgh.
Mohan, who only played in one game for the Wolverines in 2020, has a connection to the Vols via former Michigan linebackers Brian Jean-Mary.
That’s one of the main reasons Mohan is transferring to UT.
“I have a lot of trust in him,” said Mohan to VolQuest’s Austin Price. “He knows how I move and how to get the best out of me. He knows how to use me. I just trust him so much.”
The familiarity with Jean-Mary obviously makes Mohan a great fit for Tennessee.
But that’s not the biggest reason that Mohan will be a key addition for the Vols.
One of Tennessee’s biggest struggles in 2020 was defending the middle of the field. The Vols’ linebackers didn’t perform well in coverage, which left Tennessee susceptible to slants and drag routes.
Mohan should immediately help the Vols in that area. At Michigan, Mohan played in a “viper” role, which was basically a hybrid safety/linebacker position.
That means Mohan has exactly the type of experience that Tennessee desperately needs. He knows how to play in coverage, but he can also be effective against the run. He’s a bit undersized for a linebacker, but he’ll still be able to fill an extremely big need for the Vols (beggars can’t be choosers).
Heupel’s improvement of Tennessee’s roster, which was left in shambles after previous head coach Jeremy Pruitt was fired, has been extremely impressive.
The Vols have a long way to go before they’ll be ready to compete with the likes of Florida and Georgia, but Heupel has Tennessee’s football program in a much better spot than it was a few months ago.
