First Call: Are Browns a fit for Steven Nelson?; NFL clears a hurdle for Steelers' return to Saint Vincent; ex-Penguin shines - TribLIVE

Wednesday’s “First Call” has some positive signs when it comes to the prospect of the Pittsburgh Steelers getting back out to Saint Vincent College for training camp.

The Browns could be a fringe landing spot for former Steelers cornerback Steven Nelson. At least one Ravens player appears to be stepping up efforts to acquire star receiver, Julio Jones. Antonio Brown has his new contract in Tampa Bay.

And a former Penguin is an overtime hero in the NHL playoffs.

A step in the right direction

For those wondering if the Steelers might get training camp back at Saint Vincent College this summer, there was a step forward from a league perspective.

That’s according to the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

There was little reason to take camp out of Pittsburgh unless fans would be allowed, so for those wanting the tradition of Latrobe to return, this is a positive indicator.

However, don’t book plans yet. Hurdles may still exist from a state or local government point of view. Not to mention what the college will allow. Or what the Steelers want.

Meaning the players themselves or the franchise itself. But at least the NFL barriers appear to be coming down in terms of attendance.

Pelissero went on to say that rules regarding masking and vaccinations “will be dictated by teams in concert with state and local guidelines, not by the NFL. But with 100% capacity expected at all stadiums, covered seats and pods will be gone.”

As recently as May 13, Steelers owner Art Rooney II said those gray areas may still be the hitch.

“I wish I could say it’s a done deal,” Rooney told Steelers.com on May 13. “(Having training camp at Saint Vincent) is certainly Plan A for us. That’s what we’re planning for, but unfortunately there still are some issues we’ve got to iron out, and some of them have to do with the Players Association and discussions about training camp and covid protocols and all of that.”

Staying close?

Could free-agent cornerback Steven Nelson stay in the AFC North? That’s what some who cover the Cleveland Browns are wondering.

Jared Mueller of Browns Wire published a post suggesting that might be a good marriage, on the premise he might be a replacement for Terrance Mitchell who left in free agency for the Houston Texans.

“In 2020, Nelson had two interceptions and was graded by Pro Football Focus with a 67.1 overall grade and a 68.1 coverage grade, good for 48th best coverage corner in the NFL,” said Mueller. “For reference, Terrance Mitchell was ranked 75th in coverage with a grade of 63.4 last year as the Browns’ number two cornerback.”

Mueller said that Nelson would compete with 2021 first-round draft choice Greg Newsome II and 2019 second-round pick Greedy Williams in nickel and dime situations.

But he believes that ESPN’s projected signing price of $4.5 million to the Arizona Cardinals on a one-year contract might be a little steep for the Browns to match. Plus he thinks there may be too many bodies In Cleveland’s secondary already.

A.B.’s knee

It took a while but Antonio Brown’s long-reported contract to stay with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is a done deal.

The former Steeler, Raider and Patriot agreed to stay with his latest team weeks ago.

But a bothersome knee prevented A.B. from passing a physical. Yet ESPN’s Jenna Laine now reports that the wide receiver’s knee is OK, and the deal has been processed. She said that sources were telling her that Brown was at the Bucs facility Tuesday.

The NFL Network had reported that the deal was worth up to $6.25 million with $3.1 million fully guaranteed, including a $2 million signing bonus.

It’s unknown if Mr. Big Chest will take part in the franchise’s voluntary OTAs.

Birds of a feather

A big-name Raven is stumping for a big-name Falcon.

This week, Baltimore Raven Pro Bowl cornerback Marlon Humphrey took to Twitter in hopes of goosing the trade process surrounding Atlanta Falcons receiver Julio Jones.

Humphrey wants Jones to be a part of his organization.

Jones can’t just leave as a free agent. But whatever willingness he may have to adjust his salary now — or in the future — may expedite that process.

Recently, the Ravens were listed as one of the top four favorites to sign Jones according to PointsBet.

Captain Clutch

Carolina Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal won Game 5 of his team’s first-round Central Division playoff series against the Nashville Predators. The former Penguins center did so with an overtime goal to polish off the Preds 3-2.

The ‘Canes have a 3-2 series edge. They’ll look to eliminate the Predators on Thursday night in Nashville.

That’s Staal’s fourth goal and fifth point of the postseason already.
