The Pinova plant in nearby Brunswick, Ga. caught fire Saturday and strong winds are reportedly pushing the smoke over the island.

Residents within a half-mile radius of the factory are now being evacuated, according to the Glynn County Board of Commissioners.

Fire officials have not confirmed how the fire started.

Photos obtained by Channel 2 Action News show a large black cloud of smoke over the island.

Brunswick police officers and firefighters are on the scene working to put the fire out.

It’s unclear how long the shelter-in-place order may stay in place.
