ST. SIMONS, Ga. — A portion of St. Simons Island is being evacuated after a chemical plant caught fire Saturday afternoon.
The large fire led to Glynn County issuing a shelter-in-place order for parts of the island within a one-mile radius of the island.

The Pinova plant in nearby Brunswick, Ga. caught fire Saturday and strong winds are reportedly pushing the smoke over the island.
Residents within a half-mile radius of the factory are now being evacuated, according to the Glynn County Board of Commissioners.
Fire officials have not confirmed how the fire started.
Photos obtained by Channel 2 Action News show a large black cloud of smoke over the island.

Brunswick police officers and firefighters are on the scene working to put the fire out.
It’s unclear how long the shelter-in-place order may stay in place.
