CT-based mattress factory to close, 157 layoffs expected - CTPost

A Windsor Locks mattress factory will close later this year, resulting in 157 people losing their jobs, according to a notice filed with the Connecticut Department of Labor.

Most of the layoffs at SSB Manufacturing Co. will take place on June 30, according to a notice received by state Labor Department officials on Monday. The manufacturing plant at 100 D. Neil Hagen Drive is scheduled to close Aug. 4.

The majority of those being laid off are manufacturing workers, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act filing made by the company. But employees in logistics, quality control, customer service and material handling as well as shipping and receiving will also be put out of work.

Eric Mangan, a Serta Simmons Bedding spokesman, said the closing of the Windsor Locks factory is part of an ongoing effort to build "a high-performing and resilient supply chain."

"As part of this, we are optimizing our manufacturing footprint which includes expanding our operations in some areas and consolidating or closing other operations," Mangan said. "We are grateful for the contributions that our Windsor Locks manufacturing teams have made to SSB and are committed to supporting these associates through the transition.”

News of the closing of the factory comes just two months after the company's corporate parent, Georgia-based Serta Simmons Bedding filed for Chapter 11 federal bankruptcy protection. But even before the Jan. 24 bankruptcy, the company was closing or consolidating factories across the United States as far back as April 2022.

Serta Simmons Bedding opened the 270,000 square foot factory in Windsor Locks in 2018, having relocated from a manufacturing plant in  Springfield, Mass. The Windsor Locks facility employed more than 240 people at the time.
