The narrative of LSU players going to the Saints every year will never die, despite how rare it is for the New Orleans Saints to actually draft the Baton Rouge prospects. I can’t blame anyone, it’s always a fun conversation to have. I’m an LSU student so I’m never innocent of it either. Let’s take a look at all of the LSU players heading into the draft and how they would fit in black and gold next season.
WR Ja’Marr Chase
It won’t be able to happen, as it looks like Chase could possibly be a top 5 draft pick. It’s fun to think about though. LSU fans could still have something to look forward to as he looks like he could be a fun option for the Cincinnati Bengals to pair with former teammate Joe Burrow with their first round pick.
DB Kary Vincent Jr.
Like Chase, Vincent opted not to play for LSU this season. He did, however, have a great impact on the Tigers national championship run. He projects as a slot corner in the NFL. Should the Saints want to transition Chauncey Gardner-Johnson to a more traditional safety role, with Jenkins not being the youngest player on the team, Vincent could take over in the slot.
NT Tyler Shelvin
Tyler Shelvin’s fit is less apparent than most other players on this list, but it is there. Should the Saints move on from players like Sheldon Rankins or Malcolm Brown, Shelvin would be a good replacement as that 0 or 1-tech run defender the Saints missed desperately when Malcolm Brown was hurt.
FB Tory Carter
As much as I like Tory Carter, the Saints had Michael Burton last season and I don’t see the need to move on from him. Should the Saints not bring Burton back next year, I could see Carter as a UDFA fitting into that role just fine. He would also be a good locker room presence as well.
WR Terrace Marshall Jr.
This is is just too obvious. Marshall is projected to go around the Saints first selection and is at a position they are potentially going to address in the draft. A big-bodied duo of Michael Thomas and Terrace Marshall across from each other with Deonte Harris in the slot is not something I would complain about. Depending on who the Saints QB is next season, his potential as a deep threat would be something that Saints fans haven’t seen since Brandin Cook. Marshall isn’t as fast, but gets open and makes some great catches.
WR/ST Racey McMath
This is the most likely fit on this entire list. The Saints love their special teamers. McMath is going to have a long NFL career and I would not mind seeing that take place in New Orleans. He is very fast and the reason I haven’t made a Devery Henderson comp is that he is also huge at 6’3 and 230 lbs. Would be a great day 3 pick for the Saints.
LB Jabril Cox
The North Dakota State transfer made a big impact in his one year in Baton Rouge. He showed prowess in both blitzing into the backfield and in coverage. He would be a great fit in the Saints defense along with Demario Davis and potentially Kwon Alexander. He would benefit greatly from learning under Demario, as he only had a year of FBS football after starting in the FCS.
S? Jacoby Stevens
Jacoby is a safety, but I really want to see him work out at linebacker during this week at the Senior Bowl. He wasn’t terrible, but I think he would excel in a system that favors undersized hybrid linebackers. His talents weren’t really utilized at LSU, but I could see him having a better career in the NFL.
P Zach Von Rosenberg
Lastly, Von Rosenberg is a fan favorite from LSU. Sadly, there is not much need for him in New Orleans. Even though Thomas Morstead is on the older side, they likely have his replacement stashed in the strong-legged Blake Gillikin.
