Again, it looks like the plan is for Ohio State to promote Matt Barnes (to basically replace Greg Mattison) and Parker Fleming (to basically replace Barnes). However, if that does not transpire, could Mike Pettine be a good option to replace Mattison? He sure has one impressive resume.
The case for Pettine
Pettine, 54, is best known in Ohio for being the head coach of the Cleveland Browns for two seasons (2014-15) where he complied a record of 10-22. Yes, not exactly a sparkling record, but Vince Lombardi likely would have had trouble winning with those Browns teams.
Here is what Pro Football History wrote about Pettine's tenure in Cleveland:
"Pettine was hired by the Cleveland Browns at the conclusion of the 2013 season to fill the vacant head coaching position. The team had experienced positive improvement over the previous season, winning more games (7) than any year since 2007. Pettine was fired after the 2014 season when the Browns won only three games."
Most-recently, Pettine was the defensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers for three seasons (2018-20) and was just let go by the Packers.
Pettine also served as the defensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills (2013) and the New York Jets (2009-12). The Jets made the AFC Championship Game in each of Pettine's first two seasons as defensive coordinator.
Why did Pettine leave the Jets to work for the Bills? To work with his good friend Doug Marrone. Here is the write-up from Pro Football History:
"After the 2012 season, Pettine accepted a lateral position with the Buffalo Bills and new head coach Doug Marrone. His new position came with an increase in responsibility. While he was the defensive coordinator for the Jets, Ryan remained the primary defensive play-caller. Pettine's role with the Bills included play calling duties for the defense. During his lone season with the Bills, the defense would make dramatic improvements, leading Pettine to be a prime head coaching candidate."
Pettine is a native of Pittsburgh and played college football at Virginia.
If Pettine is not hired as a full-time assistant coach at Ohio State, he would be a very attractive candidate to bring in as an adviser/consultant for the defense. And he might be willing to do it. After leaving the Browns, he took the 2016 season off from football. He then returned in 2017, but was just a consultant for the Seattle Seahawks.
