Urban Meyer and the NFL. The latest rumors surrounding the legendary college coach and squarely in Jacksonville, FL as Meyer is expected to be the top target and possibly the new head coach of the Jaguars very soon.
The Jaguars landed the No. 1 overall pick in April’s draft and if Meyer lands in Jacksonville, there is great expectation that the former Florida and Ohio State leader would select Clemson star quarterback Trevor Lawrence, giving the Jaguars instant buzz. If this is the case, some analysts believe this would be a tremendous fit for Meyer’s first NFL gig.
“That Other Pregame Show” on CBS Sports broke it down after host Adam Schein asked if Meyer would be a great fit with the Jaguars.
“Urban Meyer is great,” Kyle Long said. “I grew up watching dominant teams of his. I think he would be great in the Florida market and we were talking about Trevor Lawrence. This guy down in Florida is going to put butts in seats.”
Former veteran NFL linebacker London Fletcher agreed.
“Can you imagine Trevor Lawrence and Urban Meyer in that market,” Fletcher said. “Butts in the seats and he is a winner, a proven winner.”
“I might get season tickets,” Long responded.
However, two analysts said while it would be a big hire, it wouldn’t be a perfect fit.
“I went no simply because of your superlative fantastic,” Amy Trask said. “I think he might be a fine hire, a good hire. To me fantastic means top of the chart, but I'm not there with this hire.”
Jonathan Jones said he was a proven winner in college, but it wouldn’t necessarily translate to the NFL.
“You know, he's a proven winner in college,” Jones said. Here’s the other thing, he's had a lot of health issues and those health issues seem to happen when the losing happens.”
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Jacksonville Jaguars are expected to fire coach Doug Marrone.
"The team has shown interest in former Florida and Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, who has been lining up a staff and telling people he's close to in the football community that he expects to land in Jacksonville, per sources," Rapoport wrote. "The Jaguars won't make a firm and final decision on Marrone until after the season, but this is the expected outcome provided Jacksonville feels confident it can find Marrone's replacement."
Rapoport noted that the decision to fire Marrone is not final, nor is Meyer's commitment to take the job if offered. Still, based on the wording it seems like Meyer legitimately could end up with Jacksonville. Rapoport also reported that Jacksonville could pursue current Ohio State coach Ryan Day if Meyer decides not to take the job.
Meyer won national titles at Florida and Ohio State with other head coaching stints at Utah and Bowling Green. He has been mentioned as a possible candidate with the Dallas Cowboys, but that job seems unlikely to come open this offseason with coach Mike McCarthy in his first year at the helm. Meyer is just 56 years old, and taking an NFL job could interest him due to the lack of need to pour hours into recruiting, which is a very significant part of college head coaching jobs.
According to Rapoport, family factors could complicate the decision for Meyer.
"Meyer has weighed big-time job opportunities in the past, with the University of Texas being the most recent," Rapoport wrote. "Over the past two years, NFL head coaching jobs are said to have intrigued him. However, Meyer has not firmly committed to coaching at all next year. Currently, he is a Fox Sports college football analyst and to grab any job would take him away from his family, including his grandchildren."
