ESPN recruiting director: 5-star QB Jadyn Davis a ‘nice fit’ for Michigan - MLive.com

When Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh landed five-star prospect J.J. McCarthy in the 2021 class, many wondered if reeling in top quarterbacks would become a regular occurrence given his NFL success at the position.

That wasn’t the case the past two cycles as the Wolverines missed on several of their top targets and didn’t land any four- or five-star quarterbacks.

Harbaugh and co. ended the drought Friday when Charlotte (N.C.) Providence Day 2024 five-star Jadyn Davis committed to the Wolverines in an announcement on SportsCenter.

Davis, who is ranked No. 28 overall nationally, according to the 247Sports Composite system, becomes the second five-star and third top-100 signal-caller to commit to Michigan during the Harbaugh era.

“I think this is a really nice marriage between skill set and scheme,” ESPN recruiting director Tom Luginbill said on the broadcast. “I never want to downplay the value of an NFL background when it comes to the recruitment of the quarterback position. When you have those principles and that foundation, and although Michigan’s become more explosive, a little bit more wide open, but every young man at this stage has dreams and aspirations of playing in the NFL. I think for Jim Harbaugh and Michigan, having that background can really play well in recruiting because it’s something that kids are gravitating towards, and I think it’s a really nice fit for the young man.”

Listed at 6 feet, Davis is on the shorter side for a college quarterback. Although he isn’t considered much of a runner, Luginbill said he is one of the most polished quarterbacks in the class. The 202-pounder passed for 3,425 yards and 43 touchdowns as a junior while leading Providence Day to a 12-1 record and a state championship. He also rushed for 26 yards and two scores.

“This young man reminds me an awful lot of UCLA’s Dorian Thompson Robinson (top-50 four-star quarterback in the 2018 class),” Luginbill said. “Very similar skill set. Good athlete, maybe not an elite runner, but good enough to keep plays alive and get you out of trouble. But smooth, poised, a well-groomed thrower of the football, a natural passer of the football.”

Davis has 32 reported offers and was recruited by many of the premier programs in the country, such as Ohio State, Georgia, Alabama, Clemson, Oregon and LSU. But Michigan has long been considered the favorite to land him, even after he pushed back his commitment timeline a few times.

“I think just in listening to him, we would all agree that he’s very mature,” Luginbill said. “He’s thought this thing through, he’s gone through all the scenarios. And you know what, it’s a long process. When you’ve been recruited from the eighth grade and you’re getting tugged in a lot of different directions, there’s only so many spots at quarterback now with the transfer portal making it very limited. So you jump on that opportunity that you’re most comfortable with. And in this case, it’s Michigan.”
