It was only a few days ago that Corey Kispert’s meeting and workout with the Wizards became public, but the Wizards got their man as they selected him 15th overall in Thursday’s draft.
In Kispert, the Wizards are getting perhaps the draft’s best shooter and someone that can play well off the ball and knock down shots from deep. A 22-year-old out of Gonzaga, he shot 44 percent from deep last season.
But in the Wizards, Kispert is coming to a team where he immediately felt comfortable in a city he liked from the jump.
“I met with (Wizards general manager) Tommy (Sheppard), and I loved it,” Kispert said. “It was my first time ever being in D.C., loved the city, I loved staying where I stayed in that area. Tommy was just very complimentary of me and my game, and I had a great time visiting with them and the staff. So, I had a good workout, I enjoyed my time there, so check, check, check.”
Kispert’s meeting and workout wasn’t public until just a few days ago, but he clearly fit what the Wizards were looking for.

“They just thought I’d be a perfect complement to a ball-dominant guard like Brad (Beal),” Kispert said. “I can play off of him, move the furniture around, set pieces up for Brad to score and make plays. I’m much more than just a 3-point shooter too, so I can make plays on my own.”
The Wizards didn’t lay out their interest in drafting Kispert at 15 explicitly from the start, but he said they certainly made their interest known.
“They were gracious enough to tell me to my face,” Kispert said. “Tommy thought I was a great fit for Washington, and told me that on my visit. He didn’t guarantee me anything, he didn’t tell me what was going to happen tonight, but I had a great visit, had a great time, and I really enjoyed myself when I was in the building.”
Now, Kispert will join a team that recently traded Russell Westbrook to the Lakers and has immediately boosted its shooting in one night.
That works well enough for Kispert, who said he thinks he can be one of the best shooters in the world.
“I’m so excited to play with a player like (Beal), of his caliber,” Kispert said. “And the front office clearly sees that too and really believes in the kind of player I can be.”
