The Toronto Blue Jays are one of many teams that are in the hunt for starting pitching. Currently, their starting pitching is 13th in baseball on the season with an ERA of 4.00 but their 4.42 FIP is 19th in baseball. The Colorado Rockies, of course, have one the biggest starting pitchers on the market in Jon Gray.
Eno Sarris of The Athletic suggested in this article (subscription required) on Tuesday that the Toronto Blue Jays need to pounce on Gray because Gray’s pitches would have more movement and he has above-average command (both of which Sarris has evidence for).
Currently, the Blue Jays starting rotation has Hyun-jin Ryu, Robbie Ray, Steven Matz, Ross Stripling, and Thomas Hatch. Hatch would be the odd-man out as he just stepped into their rotation when Alek Manoah (back contusion) was placed on the IL. Manoah was the Blue Jays #5 prospect entering the season.
Stripling, the former Dodgers pitcher would likely be the next guy out of the rotation as he has struggled the most.
The Colorado Rockies could also help the Toronto Blue Jays with their bullpen issues
Since June 1, the Toronto Blue Jays have a bullpen ERA of 4.82, which is 20th in that span.
About five weeks ago, we examined whether or not the Blue Jays would be interested in Bard and Givens and since then, the Blue Jays bullpen ERA has been worse (5.08 ERA).
In addition to not pitching well, the Blue Jays have a slew of injuries in their bullpen. Currently, they have an astounding eight relievers on the injured list, including former Colorado Rockies pitcher Tyler Chatwood.
The Rockies have relievers Mychal Givens and Daniel Bard on the trade block as well. If the Rockies don’t get a trade offer that they like from the Blue Jays, the Rockies could look to pair one (or both) of them in a deal so that they get more quality prospects in return.
There are, reportedly, about 10 teams that are in need of or interested in starting pitching help so the Rockies should be getting some quality offers from teams, like the Blue Jays in the coming days before the deadline on Friday.
