In early March 2020, I was in the gym with my personal trainer, squatting heavy and doing whatever we could to jack my heart rate up. Two weeks later, I was texting my trainer and praying I'd see her again at the gym in April. You probably know how this story goes, but I didn't see her again at the gym.

I haven't been back since, even though it reopened toward the end of 2020 in my state. Like others, I've focused on working out at home. In November, I received a Tempo Studio to review. I was so excited to try it, since I loved to lift heavy at the gym, and at the time, there was no other machine with heavy weights available. Some NordicTrack released similar products, but I haven't seen another home-fitness studio with a barbell. I love to squat, so I was pumped to have a barbell at home..

At the time of my initial review, I noted that Tempo Fit offers weightlifting programs, but an injury made it hard for me to commit to 4-5 workouts a week. I've since recovered and was cleared by my doctor to tackle these programs. For the last 10 weeks, I've taken three different Tempo programs and I am sad I didn't get started sooner.

When using your Tempo Studio, you'll be prompted to join a program. The programs are a structured set of classes that build toward a common goal. The programs range in length from two weeks to six weeks, and you can pick among beginner, intermediate and expert level programs. If you've never taken a program before, I'd suggest starting out as a beginner, even if you've been using your studio for months. Depending on the program, the number of classes varies from 10 to 35 classes.

I initially joined a fight camp program and realized in the first class it was not the style of workout for me. I dropped it and moved into a 2-week MetCon, which is meant to jump-start or re-start your fitness regimen.

I had nothing but glowing remarks in my initial review of the Tempo, and that was before I even tested the programs. Since then, I've become a loyal Tempo user. I use it at least four to five times a week now. Having a program simplifies things. I don't have to think twice; I just turn the machine on and get started.

Pros of Tempo Programs

  • Clear, easy workout schedule 
  • No push to finish in exactly that number of weeks
  • Very challenging workouts that you'll feel great after
  • Recovery days are built-in

As I mentioned, the programs eliminate having to think about what class to do. There were times before when I'd spend 15 minutes in front of my machine, scrolling through options. While I love the Tempo classes, I'm sometimes picky, and if left to choose, I'll often pick something easy and quick instead of a challenge.

While the classes are meant to be finished in a set number of weeks, you can push a class to the following week without issue. Choosing how many classes you want to do in a week when you first sign up allows you to earn a "streak" from Tempo. If you want to do only three classes a week, you can. Obviously you'll get a better results if you follow the program schedule, and the classes will push you, but you'll incredible when you finish a program.

Most programs are weightlifting heavy, though they mix in bodyweight workouts. Depending on the style of the program, you'll get some leg-centric weeks, or upper body-focused weeks. Regardless, each program works in a mobility day along the way. When you lift heavy, you can't push hard seven days a week. The mobility classes force you to slow down and get in tune with your body. My favorite days were when a program had a 45-minute leg day with a 15-minute mobility right after. I never felt like I couldn't walk up the stairs after those days (e.g., this happened when I tried Quadzilla 3 in my initial review).

Now, this is more of a Tempo con than of the programs alone. I realized that the heart rate monitor that comes with my Tempo is fairly off. But so was my Fitbit device. Sometimes the Tempo would say I burned 300 more calories than my Fitbit said I did. I happen to wear three monitors while I work out to try and get the most accurate reading. I'd say my Myzone device has the most accurate heart rate monitor of them, but it's worn right under my chest, flat against my skin.

I personally like programs that have the same coach for every class, but I know that's just a preference. I'm marking the different coaches for one program as a con because it can feel a little less consistent than a program with just one coach. I felt more tied to the programs with one coach, but I also chose that program because I loved that coach. This could also be a pro, because it forced me to use other coaches and get accustomed to their styles.

Overall

The one drawback of Tempo has nothing to do with the machine and all to do with the heart rate monitor.

Since I started using the programs, Tempo has added a few more. I hope Tempo continues to do this, so I can keep using them and still have them feel fresh. During a pandemic, it's hard to hold yourself accountable 365 days a year, but having these programs has helped me. I haven't skipped a workout in 10 weeks now, which is not something I could confidently say a year ago when I had to say goodbye to my gym and my personal trainer.
