STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — It took firefighters five hours to take down the blaze that ripped through a Mariners Harbor factory Wednesday afternoon, shooting flames into the air, as well as thick black smoke that was visible for miles.
The inferno was reported at 60 Davidson St. at 2:30 p.m., according to a Fire Department spokesman.
The FDNY said on Twitter the response went to a fifth alarm, which indicates more than 200 firefighters were on the scene.
At 7:30 p.m., the fire was brought under control, the FDNY said on Twitter.
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries and one EMS worker suffered serious injuries, according to an official from the FDNY media relations office.
All three were taken to area hospitals.

The warehouse houses multiple different commercial occupancies.
There were workers in the building when the blaze broke out, but all were accounted for, said FDNY Acting Chief of Department Thomas Richardson.
Once source told the Advance/SILive.com there were flammable materials in the building.
During the height of the response, bright orange flames could be seen shooting into the sky as firefighters on extension buckets tried to douse the fire with hoses.
Anyone in close proximity could feel waves of heat as flames intermittently blasted out from the smoke. The warehouse was badly burned.

Thick black smoke hovered over the area and billowed so far into the sky it was visible for miles across the borough, even hovering over the Staten Island Expressway.
Police shut down streets in the area to accommodate the response, including South Avenue and Brabant Street. Buses were delayed in the area.

RESIDENTS REACT
The sight of overwhelming flames and smoke jarred residents from their afternoon routines.
“I was sitting on the couch and all of a sudden the air went black,” said Diane Dzwonkowski, who has lived on Christopher Street for 32 years. “It got very dark. I started seeing paper debris flying down the block.”
She said she didn’t hear any explosion or anything like that prior to seeing the fire trucks going toward the factory, but once the blaze was going, she heard an occasional “pop, pop, pop.”
Dzwonkowski said she had never seen anything like it.

Jose Torres said it appeared the warehouse had “melted.”
“The smoke was really bad,” he said. “Before you couldn’t even see them [firefighters battling the blaze].”
Dan Iacono was working near Roxbury Street when a co-worker told him about the fire.
“I came around the corner and saw all the smoke,” he said.

Fran Carrougher was upstairs in her apartment across the street when she heard fire engines and decided to go down and see what was happening.
“I crossed the street over and saw all the fire,” she said. “I didn’t expect it. It was black smoke and flames.”
Randy Moreales said he saw the blaze from down Richmond Terrace.
“Very scary,” he said.
