Mitchell Schwartz to the Titans?

It is incredibly difficult to figure out how much the Tennessee Titans actually value the offensive tackle position.

On one hand, they have made significant investments in the position over Jon Robinson’s tenure. In just five years as Tennessee’s GM, Robinson has spent two first round picks on offensive tackles, and they traded then-second-year wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham for Dennis Kelly who they re-signed to a second contract.

Then again, they also let Jack Conklin walk despite him being an All-Pro (and earning that honor again in 2020) and cut Dennis Kelly after a very good season for the Titans.

It doesn’t make sense how they have spent or invested in the position and honestly, it hasn’t made a big difference on the field. At times Tennessee has had one of the best tackle tandems in the NFL with Taylor Lewan and Jack Conklin/Dennis Kelly, but the offense was never more productive than it was in 2020 when they ended up playing Ty Sambrailo and David Quessenberry for the bulk of the snaps at left tackle while Kelly manned the right side.

So it would be both incredibly surprising and…well not surprising at all, if the Titans signed former Kansas City Chiefs right tackle Mitchell Schwartz.

In a recent article, Nick Shook of NFL.com linked the two when asked to project where the top remaining free agents would land. He said:

Adding Schwartz, who recently underwent back surgery to address an injury that shortened his 2020 season, would be a slam-dunk move that would bolster the offensive line and help the Titans return to opening big holes for Derrick Henry.

I don’t really disagree. In fact, this is something that I wrote about the other day when I looked at which of the second-wave free agents that the Titans might look at.

Right now the Titans have penciled in a position battle between Kendall Lamm and Ty Sambrailo, which makes sense. Sambrailo was a very nice backup for Taylor Lewan in the middle of the season and he knows the system well.

On the other hand, Lamm is a little bit younger and more athletic than Sambrailo so he is worth a look, especially since Sambrailo is coming off of an injury that ended his season.

Signing Schwartz would give Tennessee a clear starter at the position and it would allow Lamm to stay in a similar role to what he did with Cleveland which was being a swing tackle and occasional jumbo tight end.

Similarly, Sambrailo could be a high-end backup at left tackle while also having the skills and experience to make you believe that he could fill every spot except for center in a pinch.
