Citing economic pressures related to the the COVID-19 pandemic, Porsche Motorsport announced on Thursday that it will be ending its factory involvement with the 911 RSR in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship after the 2020 season.

The Porsche Motorsport 911 RSR program captured the drivers', team and manufacturers' championships in the IMSA GTLM class in 2019. The No. 912 and No. 911 Porsche GT teams of American partner CORE autosport finished 1-2 in the final standings.

The Porsches finished 2-3 in the GTLM class at this year's Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona behind only BMW Team RLL. Porsche currently ranks second in the championship with CORE autosport.

The support of customer teams in the GTD class in the IMSA WeatherTech series, as well as the Michelin Pilot Challenge and the GT3 Cup Challenge USA, will continue unchanged in cooperation with Porsche Motorsport North America and Porsche Cars North America.

“The decision to halt our factory involvement in the IMSA series was not an easy one for us,” said Fritz Enzinger, vice president Porsche Motorsport. “With a view to the current corporate situation in connection with the coronavirus pandemic, it is only logical for Porsche Motorsport to make a contribution to coping with the economic fallout.

“We’ve openly discussed our exit with all involved. At this point, we’d like to convey our sincere thanks to Jim France and the colleagues at IMSA for their understanding. Porsche belongs in endurance racing. We will work hard to ensure that this is only a temporary auf Wiedersehen.”

Added Steffen Höllwarth, head of operations IMSA Championship at Porsche Motorsport, "We hope that this season’s races will still be contested so that we don’t leave the IMSA stage soundlessly. Of course, such decisions impact the mood, but we’re all professionals and we’re now focusing on the remaining races of the current season.”

IMSA plans to resume its season July 3-4 at Daytona International Speedway.

The Porsche GT Team has been with CORE autosport since 2014. Since that time in GTLM, the team has amassed 18 wins, 17 poles, 48 podiums, three manufacturers' championships, two team championships and two drivers' championships.

“This has been an amazing seven-year partnership,” CORE autosport COO Morgan Brady said in a press release. “I’m extremely proud of everything we’ve accomplished. While we continue to prepare for the remaining 10 rounds of the IMSA Championship, we’re sensitive to how this departure will affect our team members and their families.”

CORE Autosport is unsure of its plans beyond 2020.

“CORE's partnership with Porsche has always been a dream for me,” CORE autosport owner Jon Bennett said. “Not just because I love the brand, but because partnering with Porsche’s history and reputation raised the visibility of the exceptional work we do at CORE. I thank Porsche for an incredible seven years and I thank our employees who are the best in the business. I am honored we shared this journey together."
