DeJean sees great fit with Oladokun in Iowa secondary - 247Sports

Iowa four-star in-state safety commit Cooper DeJean has been the lone defensive back commit in Iowa's class for quite some time now.

He was one of the two when Jordan Oladokun committed the first time, then was by himself when he decommitted, and then joined again when Oladokun decided to commit back to Iowa's 2021 class on Sunday.

Despite Oladokun decommitting, DeJean continued to keep at it with him and kept recruiting him hard.

Now with Oladokun back in the class, DeJean feels good about Iowa's base at defensive back in the 2021 class.

"I think he’s a really good player who has great ball skills and is really aggressive," DeJean told 247Sports. "I think our play styles would go well with each other. I’ve been talking to him over his recruiting process. He’s a dude that works really hard and I think we would go well together in the secondary."

Cornerback and safety are two positions that Iowa has had success developing over the past few years in the Phil Parker era.

These two positions groups are vital in Iowa's defense year in and year out, and the athleticism and length that Iowa has to start in 2021 with DeJean and Oladokun is promising.

One of the main strengths for Oladokun is that he's got great hands for a cornerback. He caught 28 passes last fall for 532 yards and six touchdowns. Having great hands as a defensive back makes a player more beneficial to the defense and harder for opposing offenses to gameplan around.

As a sophomore, Oladokun had seven interceptions for Gaither. When he was a junior, he only picked off two passes, but that was because offenses refused to throw to his side of the field.

"I think it’s great to have hands like he does," DeJean said. "That makes him an even better player. It can really change the momentum of the game if we can create turnovers and I think he can definitely help with that."

In two of the past three seasons, Iowa has been in the top-five in the country in defensive interceptions per game. Adding a player with Oladokun's skillset puts Iowa in a good position to continue that trend over the next few seasons.

"Playing wide receiver, he played in a really complex offense last year with a quarterback that threw 50 touchdowns," said Charles Williams, who trains Oladokun at Pick 6 Academy in Tampa. "When he gets on defense, he knows it’s coming. Playing wide receiver has really helped him on defense. It’s uncanny the way sometimes he’s looking at the quarterback, and the minute the quarterback takes his hands off the football, he’s breaking on the ball because he knows it’s coming. It’s something we’ve worked on, but it’s something you can’t really coach either.”
