The architect for a proposed Dunkin’ said the project is being designed to fit with the traffic at Six Corners.
The Joliet City Council put the project on hold this week, calling for a traffic study to be done before it votes on a permit allowing a drive-thru at the doughnut and coffee shop.
The plan already has been through “a nice, long, extensive review with staff,” architect Mario Valentini told the council at the end of its Tuesday meeting.
Valentini said a traffic study can be done but noted that traffic is not what it has been, an apparent reference to reduced traveling during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He said the developers of the Dunkin’ store already have reached out to neighbors, something requested by Councilwoman Jan Quillman, and will be making more contact.
“We received some support from that area,” Valentini said.
The plan is to go door-to-door to tell people about the project.
Council members raised concerns about a coffee drive-thru during morning rush hour because of the heavy traffic at Six Corners, where three major arterial roads come together.
Dunkin’, which went by the name Dunkin’ Donuts until last year, would not be the first major business at the site. The proposed location at 800 N. Raynor Ave. is across Raynor from a CVS pharmacy, which also has a drive-thru.
The Dunkin’ building will include room for a second business. But Valentini said it will be a low-volume business, probably a barber or hair stylist, because of limited space available for parking.
The development is planned for the vacant lot across an alley from Thayer Bros. Deli & Grille.
