Practice Notes: Pads on Game Week, Jesse Davis Fit? - Steelers Now

PITTSBURGH — The Steelers got back to work on the South Side on Monday after a long Labor Day weekend off.

As a bonus practice day, the Steelers didn’t necessarily put in a lot of the team’s game plan, but it was a fully padded practice that gave some of the team’s players that have been working back from injury a chance to knock the rust off.

Outside linebacker Alex Highsmith, who is returning from a rib injury that cost him most of the preseason, was one of those players. Nose tackle Montravius Adams (ankle), fullback Derek Watt (shoulder) and other players that missed the final preseason game can use Monday’s session as a final chance to get some hits in (and get hit) before the season starts.

WHERE DOES DAVIS FIT?

Jesse Davis has played four of the five positions on the offensive line in his NFL career, but it’s still not exactly clear where he will play with the Steelers.

Head coach Mike Tomlin said after trading for Davis last Tuesday that he would learn all the positions, and Davis said Monday that he could play anywhere whenever the Steelers need him.

The first depth chart released on Monday has him behind Chuks Okorafor at right tackle, so perhaps that’s the spot to look for Davis to make an impact, though Okorafor has probably been the most consistent contributor on a shaky offensive line through the preseason.

If Davis is going to play right tackle, it seems much more likely that would involve switching Okorafor to left tackle, but offensive coordinator Matt Canada dismissed that notion last week.

BOSS AT THE MIC

Steelers president Art Rooney II will speak to the media after Mike Tomlin does so during his usual hour on Tuesday. What’s on the docket? The Steelers aren’t saying.

NUMEROLOGY

With the preseason over, the Steelers finalized their uniform numbers for the 2022 season.

That means that one mandated change happened, as defensive lineman Larry Ogunjobi ended his standoff with tackle Dan Moore for the No. 65. Ogunjobi will instead wear No. 99 this year.

Offensive tackle Trent Scott made the switch from No. 64 to No. 72. For his second stint in Pittsburgh, Jamir Jones will wear No. 48.

On the practice squad, new cornerback Josh Jackson will wear 16, Mark Gilbert will don 31, Jason Huntley is the latest running back to wear 33, safety Andrew Adams will wear 40, inside linebacker Chappelle Russell has 49, new tight end Justin Rigg picked up 87, Delontae Scott switched to 91 and defensive tackle Renell Wren will wear 96.

Speaking of numbers, the Steelers still don’t have their front helmet number stickers on yet. That should change this week. The team doesn’t wear them it the preseason, but does in the regular season.
