HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - People came out to the West 18th Street YMCA to participate in the annual Turkey Trot Saturday morning. Families, co-workers and friends came together to run or walk the 5K fun run and load up on all the ingredients to make up a Thanksgiving feast.
‘Trot’ organizer and YMCA Wellness Director Erika Wibbels said the Hastings Y hosed this event each year to make an impact on the community.
“We love to do anything to bring people together and promote some physical activity and so, we’re glad to be able to help with that social and physical aspect,” Wibbels said.
Like Wibbels said, Steve Atwater from Hastings came back for his sixth year to participate in the holiday run for those very reasons.
“I enjoy seeing familiar faces, I enjoy seeing, just being out, the comradery,” Atwater said. “I enjoy running, it’s a good release and a good way to talk to people.”
He added, he wanted to show his support for the Y and their commitment to bringing people together in events like the Turkey Trot.
“I think it’s great that, you know, it gets the community involved, it gets them enjoying being out and being active,” he said. “And doing something as a family, I think that’s really important.”
All of the teams were given a frozen turkey at the start of the race, then made their way around the 5K route to collect other ingredients to add to their dinners.
Hastings Y had brought back the event for a number of years, and Wibbels said they might be keeping the tradition going for quite some time.
“You bet,” Wibbels told Local4 news. “This is a staple that the y brings and it’s one of our main pillars of healthy living and so, we want to engage people in whatever aspect that we can.”
Though the run may have been a competition to some, Atwater said he hoped to get something more meaningful out of the event, other than a prize.
“Just being out here and enjoying, you know, being with people, I hope to just have a good, enjoyable time,” he said.
There were 90 individuals and 20 teams that participated in the Turkey Trot and, this was the first time the Y had winners for different age categories, instead of their usual top ten male and female runners. The winner of the run was awarded a turkey for their Thanksgiving dinner.
