As we approach the end of the Fall 2021 semester, giving up on fitness goals can be tempting. Experimenting with different exercise equipment motivates me to commit to my high-intensity interval training (HIIT) routine. Below are some of the essentials in my collection.

Renew yoga mat — $9.99, Canadian Tire

Yoga mats’ soft material is a quick solution to make your workouts more comfortable. For any workout, these mats provide traction to protect slipping. This yoga mat also features antimicrobial material to prevent the spread of bacteria.

Zeus resistance bands — $10 each, Zeus Fitness

Want multipurpose workout equipment? You can use resistance bands for different types of exercises, from squats to bicep curls. Since I prefer wrist-friendly workouts, I use the bands as an alternative to free weights. They help me improve my flexibility and strength. With different levels of resistance, you can customize your workout and exercise at your own pace. Beginners should start with the lightest resistance band and gradually work up to the thickest resistance band. Do not quickly release or overstretch the bands or they might snap.

Jumping rope was one of my favourite childhood pastimes. It’s also a great way to incorporate a cardio warm up into your workout routine. If the jump rope is too long, I tend to wrap the ends around my hands a few times. Just make sure it’s not too tight!

7M HIIT workouts and timer app — Free, App Store

Hoping to save money on a gym membership? Try working out at home with this free app. It offers different levels of difficulty for HIIT workouts, ranging from 4–45 minutes. Before you begin the workout, you can preview the different steps and watch videos to help you practice new exercises. During the workout, the app has an animation you can follow along with. If you want to omit a step, the app also has a skip button. Consult with your doctor before starting a new workout plan. HIIT workouts may not be right for you.
