Troy Aikman is already skeptical of Odell Beckham's fit with Rams - New York Post

Troy Aikman is worried about how Odell Beckham Jr. will fit within the Rams’ offense after just one game.

The former NFL quarterback, who won three Super Bowl rings during his 12-year career in Dallas, discussed the team’s “beatdown” loss (31-10) to the 49ers on Monday, and said he believes QB Matthew Stafford felt pressured to target his new receiver.

Aikman referred to the interception Stafford threw on the opening drive while targeting Beckham deep down the field during an interview on 96.7 The Ticket in Dallas.

“Whether he stopped on the route or not, he’s not going to complete that pass. There’s two defenders back there,” Aikman said on “The Musers.”

“But I think Matthew now feels some of the pressure that maybe [Browns quarterback] Baker Mayfield felt, ‘hey, we got to get this guy involved,’ or ‘he’s in the game right now because he’s going to take this deep route, and I’ve got to find a way to get this ball in his hands because that’s why he’s playing on this play.’

“It’s not good, and it’s not good playing quarterback when you feel pressure to get the ball to one particular player. It just doesn’t work. So, I don’t know. Maybe they can pull themselves out of it and get it going.”

Beckham parted ways with Cleveland this month after chemistry and target volume issues with Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield. His father, Odell Beckham Sr., posted an Instagram video that appeared to showcase moments where his son was open, but Mayfield didn’t get him the ball.

Aikman said the acquisition of Beckham and linebacker Von Miller has “totally shook the chemistry, foundation and the bedrock” of the team. He added that he sees “a lot of red flags” with the 7-3 Rams as a whole.

Fans have argued that Aikman’s criticism is premature, since Beckham only arrived in Los Angeles last week. The receiver caught just two passes for 18 yards, but only played 15 snaps.

The Rams are also without No. 2 wide receiver Robert Woods after he suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during practice on Friday. Aikman called Woods one of the five best receivers in the NFL.

Rams coach Sean McVay commended Beckham in his debut with the team, noting that he “didn’t have one full-speed practice.” The wideout has two weeks to get more comfortable with the offense before the Rams visit the Packers in Week 12, as they are on bye next week.
