Wilks Chittom shined at the ninth annual Get Fit Selma! last weekend at the McRae-Gaines Learning Center.
Chittom, a Morgan Academy senior, won the COVID Conscious Defeat Diabetes 5K Run/Walk & Community Fun Run/Walk event with a time of 24:27. “I’ve been training for two months to run this event,” Chittom said. “My mother runs and she was my inspiration.”
Chittom is an honor student at Morgan Academy and plays on the soccer team. After graduation, he plans to attend Samford University.
Dr. Parks Chittom II said he was proud of his son winning the event.
The race opened Get Fit Selma!, followed by a Drive-Thru Testing & Vaccination for Selma and Dallas County residents conducted by Rural Health Medical Program, Inc.
Get Fit Selma! was presented by the Selma almunae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Taylor Internal Medicine-Selma, McRae-Gaines Learning Center, Rural Health Medicine, Vaughan Regional Medical Center and Alabama AHEC.

McRae Gaines Learning Center Director Sadie Moss said she was pleased with how the event went.
“The event went well,” Moss said. Stephanie Hamm, Co-Chair, Get Fit Selma! 2021, said she was thrilled that COVID-19 did not stop the event.
“his is the second year that Get Fit Selma! has had to cancel the in-person, interactive tabling event because of COVID-19,” Hamm said. “We had excellent medical advisors on our team – and local medical professionals that stepped in to provide testing.” We had a lot going on outdoors for the community to enjoy.”
