WATCH: N.J. factory owner has a unique way to encourage people to shop local - NJ.com

It doesn’t have to be Small Business Saturday for New Jerseyans to talk up the importance of shopping local.

Tom Marchetty, the owner of The Factory, takes that a step further — not only encouraging people to support neighboring businesses amid COVID-19 woes, but providing a home for 20 of them at his woodworking facility.

The 16,000 square-foot warehouse in Collingswood leases out to small start-ups and business owners, which occupy various sections of the space. Businesses include Endgrain Coffee, Fred Chase Wood Craft, Hart & Sapp and Falco Design, which have been based out of The Factory since before the pandemic.

Marchetty’s father started the family business as Marchetty Machinery in 1977, the year Tom was born. At the time it was located in Camden and serviced factories and shops in the Philadelphia and Camden region. The company specialized in industrial woodworking, metalworking and repairing packaging machinery.

The Factory, like many businesses in New Jersey, has taken a financial hit during the pandemic. When COVID-19 first forced businesses and schools to close, Marchetty lost 90% in revenue due to the temporary loss of his customer base — restaurants and schools. While Marchetty could not estimate exactly how much the small businesses he houses lost in income, he said all experienced significant financial loss, as well.

“I’d be lying if I said I never bought anything off of Amazon, but I try to buy anything that I can buy here locally as much as possible … and especially right now, because these guys just got hit for the last year and a half with no sales, no business so this is the time to shine with that,” Marchetty said.

This summer and fall, with fewer restrictions in place, customers have started to flow in again. Marchetty said residents shopping local will be important for him and the small businesses at The Factory.
