Infineon Opens Brand-New Chip Factory in Europe - Stansberry Research

Infineon Technologies (IFNNY) plans to provide new chips to carmakers with its newest semiconductor facility...

Earlier today, Infineon started production at its $1.9 billion Austrian chip factory. This newest factory could be a boost for the company, which has seen multiple chip production delays since the beginning of 2021.

Earlier in the year, the company's Texas-based chip plant was shut down due to Winter Storm Uri. And the current COVID-19 lockdowns have disrupted operations for its in Malaysian facilities.

These issues are putting extra pressure on Infineon's European facilities. Its Dresden plant is still behind on orders. Part of the problem is many of its clients, like Volkswagen (VWAGY), are focusing on electric cars. A lot of electric cars require even more power chips than standard models. This new facility will work together with the Dresden factory to maximize Infineon's output.

The Austrian plant will focus on making silicon power semiconductors. These chips have many uses in the auto industry, from opening and closing car windows to running navigation systems. But Infineon's newest factory won't only make auto chips... It's also outfitted to create chips for data centers and wind and solar power technologies.

While this will be a net positive for the auto industry, it won't be a sudden surge in semiconductor inventory. According to the Financial Times, the lead time for making chips is about four months.

This is the latest in a string of positive news for carmakers. Earlier this month, auto-parts manufacturer Jatco said supply chain issues should start to ease soon. CEO Teruaki Nakatsuka said he anticipates carmakers will start ramping up production between now and March. And Intel (INTC) recently announced that its Irish chip factory will dedicate some of its output toward producing car semiconductors, creating more competition for Infineon.

This means the auto industry could benefit from a boost in chip deliveries by the end of the year. And with more chips, production of cars in the U.S. and Europe will stabilize. So automakers could start seeing tailwinds in the next few months and into 2022.
