Andrew Maas has the ticket to the candy factory.
The Colorado man won a nationwide, year-long treasure hunt, solving riddles and clues leading to a park in Indiana. The grand prize is ownership of a Florida candy factory.
Maas, a 39-year-old husband and father of two, discovered a hidden small necklace with a golden ticket attached on Aug. 29 in Highland Park in Kokomo, Ind., according to the Kokomo Tribune. The winning piece for the Candyman’s Treasure Hunt had been beneath the park’s Vermont Covered Bridge for three months.
The national scavenger hunt, which lured 35,000 contestants, was orchestrated by David “Candyman” Klein, owner of the Jelly Belly brand candies and the Candyman Kitchens.
Based on a clue about “a treasure diehard,” Maas connected the hiding spot to Indiana Jones, he told the Tribune. Scanning a state map he spotted Kokomo and another clue, tied to a Beach Boys song, “Kokomo,” clicked. “It was such a fun name (Kokomo), and I knew David (Klein) was a fun, lighthearted person,” Maas said.
Maas followed more clues until he found the prize and with it ownership of a 4,000-square-foot candy factory.
Maas, however, has no interest in moving his wife and family to Florida to run a candy factory. Instead, he’s working with Klein on adjusting the prize for a cash value.
“Whatever it is, we’ll be happy with it,” Maas told the Tribune. “It’s money we didn’t have. But the excitement and adventure was the real reward. The money is the gravy on top.”
