ELYRIA, Ohio – The Elyria Fire Department worked with firefighters from Lorain and Sheffield Village to put out an oil fire at Ohio Metallgurical Services on Saturday due to an overheated furnace.
Firefighters were called around 7:15 p.m. to the factory located at 1033 Clark Street after a high-temperature furnace overheated and raised oil above the ignition temperature, Assistant Chief Kevin Szabo said.
“We were quickly notified of the fire by plant personnel,” Szabo said. “They were very helpful to us as we got the job done.”
Firefighters used foam to extinguish the oil.
There was no damage to the building, but there may be some electrical components that will need attention, Szabo said. No injuries were reported.
Another fire broke out around 10 p.m. and lasted until 12 a.m. Crews rotated as they used the water foam mixture on the oil to manage temperatures, Szabo said.
Crews remained on the scene until 3 a.m. to ensure fires would not reignite.
The factory is a heat-treating service that was established in 1947, according to the company’s website.
