After striking out on two edge rushers last offseason (Jadeveon Clowney and Vic Beasley), the Tennessee Titans must get it right in 2021 after the team had the third-fewest sacks in the NFL in 2020.

One player who could help the Titans’ cause is free-agent edge rusher Aldon Smith, who Sports Illustrated’s Connor Orr believes is a fit for Tennessee in free agency:

Signing Jadeveon Clowney last year was a sign of the Titans’ discontent on the edge, and Aldon Smith would absolutely be another stopgap solution. However, he would provide Mike Vrabel with both an adequate pass rusher and willing run stopper who will stick his nose into the thick of it.

Smith looked to be on a Hall-of-Fame trajectory early in his career after notching 33.5 sacks during his first two seasons, but a slew of off-the-field issues and suspensions stemming from those issues derailed his career.

After missing four straight seasons, Smith finally returned to the NFL to play for the Dallas Cowboys in 2020, where he played in all 16 games and tallied five sacks.

Assuming his past issues are behind him, the 31-year-old would be a solid fit and a good addition to the Titans’ defense; however general manager Jon Robinson must do more than that.

Granted, Smith would provide an upgrade by default, but he should be a complementary move and not the centerpiece of Tennessee’s attempt to improve the pass rush.
