New York Red Bulls fans should be excited about their new head coach, says their beloved former coach.
Jesse Marsch guided the Red Bulls through their most successful period to date before leaving for Europe, where he is in his second season as Red Bull Salzburg head coach. He’s not making any predictions for similar success for Gerhard Struber, but Marsch knows enough about the Austrian, from his time at FC Liefering to coaching against Marsch with Wolfsberger AC, to consider him “the right fit” to get the Red Bulls “on the track again.”
“He’s deeply rooted in Red Bull, he’s a strong believer in our system and in the way we play and he’s also a big motivator,” Marsch said on Monday's episode Extratime. “He’s a strong personality, he’s going to come and bring a lot of emotion and a lot of motivation and inspiration to what we’re doing in New York. Certainly then, he’ll be very, very focused on the discipline of the way we think about football, which I think will be good.”
Marsch, who was influential in the development of Tyler Adams, also acknowledged Caden Clark being on his radar, watching the 17-year-old’s stunning first two MLS goals. And while he also said he read the reports about Clark’s potential future at Leipzig, Marsch said he’d like Clark to have the chance to get acclimated in MLS and with his new club first.
“What a great start, always so fun to see young players achieve with the New York Red Bulls,” Marsch said. “Now let’s give him a chance to grow into that team, into that group a bit and the more that he does well and shows how good of a player he is, then we can maybe in a year start to think about what the next options are. But let’s let the kid enjoy his football, let’s let the kid enjoy his development there in New York.”
