Just call it The Legend of Zelda: Wildly Out of Breath.
Twitch streamer and torture enthusiast SuperLouis64 modded The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to support Ring Fit Adventure controls. Not only can SuperLouis64 match Link stride-for-stride on a jog through Hyrule, tasks as granular as opening menus are performed with squats and other movements.
If you’re wondering how all this matches up, Louis explains in this 60-second video. The mod locks the joystick until the player starts moving, for example, so he gets to jogging and then inputs the run on his Joy-Con. This estimate says it takes 56 minutes, 30 seconds to traverse the entirety of Breath of the Wild’s map, so I hope SuperLouis64 remembered to hydrate.
Combat slashes are performed with a series of arm swings, but the ring itself is not essential to play. It just encourages good aerobic form and range of motion. (I made that up, but seriously, SuperLouis looks like he’s leading a 5:30 class at the 24 Hour Fitness.) Best part: “Climbing the towers is actual work,” he says. As if it isn’t already!
“I’ll be tracking my calories/weight lost trying to beat the game,” SuperLouis64 said to a Redditor who mentioned the serious burn he must be feeling. “Most of it will come from diet changes but running away from electric keeses will definitely help out.”
There’s plenty more in a two-and-a-half-hour stream SuperLouis64 recorded over the weekend. Ordinarily, this is the kind of thing we expect to see from someone like Dylan “Rudeism” Beck, a streamer known for playing games with oddball controls — like Untitled Goose Game in a goose suit, and Overwatch with a piping-hot loaf of French bread.
SuperLouis64 is likewise dedicated to “playing games the wrong way,” and if you think Breath of the Wild is a big ask for fitness gaming, he applied Ring Fit controls to Dark Souls this summer. His mod also works with Mario Kart 8, and he’s played Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout with it, too.
