NUTLEY NJ – As the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic continues, the Philly Pretzel Factory in Nutley Center became the latest business to shutter during the economic slowdown.
The Nutley location, or rather their pretzels, became fixtures at school, sports, and fundraising events in the township. The rule of thumb for the past few years was, "if it didn't have a party tray from the pretzel factory, the event was not worth attending."
TAPinto Nutley was there for opening day in October 2016 when "Nutley residents welcomed the Philly Pretzel Factory to Nutley Center this weekend. The long lines of customers included first time visitors as well as patrons who had already visited a day earlier. There was even a great deal of chatter at School Pride Day at the Nutley Farmers' Market on Sunday about the pretzels."
At the time, Don Cleary, who along with his wife Bonnie owned the factory, was quick to point out that the pretzels are made from scratch on site. A quick look to the back of the location, stacks of 50 lb. flour sacks line the wall. Every batch of pretzels starts with flour, yeast, water, and salt are added in the extra large mixer to form the dough that becomes pretzels. The open workspace allowed patrons to look into the factory kitchen. As pretzels are made continuously all day most customers will see at least a part of the pretzel making process.
Everything at Philly Pretzel Factory started with the pretzel. While traditional pretzels are the top seller, guests will discover “Pretzel Dogs,” an all-beef Dietz and Watson hot dog with American cheese wrapped in pretzel dough. The cheesesteak pretzel presents that Philadelphia classic in a new form.
Philly Pretzel Factory was located at 234 Franklin Ave Nutley. It is directly across the street from Thai Essence.
