The Swiss Village Cheese Factory in Nampa used to be a big destination for kids and adults. The factory, once entirely surrounded by farm fields, featured a factory tour, ice cream shop and squeaky cheese. Oh, the squeaky cheese.
In 1999, Lactalis American Group purchased Swiss Village from the J.R. Simplot Company, and eventually closed the cafe and cheese outlet store components. But the facility kept on cranking out cheese – and expanded numerous times over the years.
Now, Lactalis employs hundreds of people in Nampa. The factory still has farm fields nearby, but also sits a stone’s throw from a new Amazon warehouse, the Ford Idaho Center, car dealers, and housing.
The company said it would launch another expansion, pouring $1.7 million into capital improvements at the Nampa site. It also hopes to hire dozens of additional employees.
“The business climate in Idaho has made adding jobs and expanding our company in Canyon County a reality during a challenging time for our state and nation,” Nampa site director Kelly Johnston said. “We’re so grateful for the partnership of Idaho Commerce and the City of Nampa throughout this process and look forward to continuing to grow and invest in our great state.”
The company said the expansion would add $20 million in new wages in the area, and bring in $8.2 million in new revenue for the state.
“Lactalis American Group has continued to make investments in Idaho and its people,” Idaho Dept. of Commerce Director Tom Kealey said. “Now is a critical time for the local economy to add jobs and Lactalis American Group in Nampa is a great example of a company committed to doing business in Idaho.”
Lactallis markets its cheese under brands like Président, Galbani, Stonyfield Organic and others.
