Emma Hayes, the highly respected manager of English champions Chelsea, is set to leave her post at the end of this season. After Chelsea’s 6-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday, the club confirmed in a statement that Hayes “will depart … to pursue a new opportunity outside of the [Women’s Super League] and club football.”
Multiple sources told The Equalizer that her next role would be head coach of the United States women’s national team.
Hayes has built her reputation with Chelsea over 11 years of success, winning six WSL titles, five FA Cups and two League Cups. Most recently, she led her side to four consecutive league championships and three straight FA Cups, holding off challenges from England’s traditional dominant force, Arsenal; the financial muscle of Manchester City; and the growing ambition of Manchester United. She also steered Chelsea to its first-ever Champions League final in 2021. All told, of her 11 cup finals with Chelsea, the 47-year-old has won seven.
