As if the newly released The Flash having bombed colossally at the box office wasn’t enough, there came along rumors of Warner Bros. wanting to sell DC Studios, along with a rumored upcoming Justice League live-action film being in the works, which is to be directed by Gunn himself. What is to be believed, and what does Gunn have to say about it?

The rumors and their fan reactions

DC fans have been in a frenzy ever since the rumors of Warner Bros. Discovery wanting to sell DC Studios came along. The DCEU hasn’t been doing very well in recent times, and with the most recent installment of the DCEU, The Flash, having flopped spectacularly at the box office, DC Studios is clearly in rather desperate need of a contingency plan.

James Gunn’s first film for DC Studios as director is the highly anticipated Superman: Legacy, which is reportedly set to release in 2025. The film is reportedly speculated to be about Superman’s human upbringing, his Kryptonian heritage, and the integration of the two. The film is reportedly going to have a few new characters as well, namely Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and Mister Terrific.

When the aforementioned was confirmed, it gave birth to newer, fresher rumors of Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav being the one pulling the strings in this regard, quite specifically with the ulterior motive of making the DCEU look better, packed with more potential, and essentially for it to make a good deal when sold.

James Gunn has addressed the rumors

However, both these rumors have been shut off by Gunn, with a distinct “No.” and “Of course not.” in response to fans’ questions about a new Justice League live-action being in the works and the ‘Zaslav-ordered addition’ of the three new characters in Superman: Legacy, respectively; on the new Twitter competitor, Threads.

For now, one can only wonder what James Gunn and Peter Safran have in mind for DC Studios and the DCEU. There has been ample fan speculation with regard to there being a chance for the DC universe if the art of filmmaking was separated from the business that it is for money-oriented entertainment conglomerates, hinting at Gunn and Safran reporting to Zaslav.

Only time will tell what’s in store for DC.
