A local mattress production facility will be put to bed later this summer as its parent company consolidates its national footprint.

Corsicana Mattress Co. announced Thursday that it intends to close the Symbol Mattress Co. production facility at 2001 Bellwood Road in August.

Production that has been handled in the Chesterfield facility will be taken on by Corsicana plants in Newington, Connecticut, and in Greensboro, North Carolina, the company said in a news release.

Fifty-four employees will be laid off at the Chesterfield plant.

Symbol has operated out of the Bellwood Road facility since 2010, according to Josh Steinreich, a spokesman for Corsicana.

Steinreich said Symbol leases the facility, which is about 80,000 square feet, per Chesterfield’s online property records.

Corsicana said the Chesterfield plant’s closure comes as it seeks to consolidate its national manufacturing and distribution operations in a bid to be more efficient. Corsicana announced the closing of a factory in LaPorte, Indiana last month.

“This consolidation is necessary to continue streamlining our manufacturing footprint, to drive efficiencies and effectiveness. Our Newington and Greensboro plants have the expertise and capacity to effectively service our customers in the mid-Atlantic region,” Corsicana CEO Eric Rhea said in the news release that announced the Chesterfield factory shuttering.

“This consolidation, along with the recent LaPorte closure, is another necessary step in our drive to return as the industry’s leader in value-priced bedding.”

Symbol didn’t respond to a request for comment Thursday. The company has a local office at 4901 Fitzhugh Ave. near Willow Lawn. Steinreich didn’t respond to a question about the future of that office.

Corsicana acquired Eastern Sleep Products Co., which operates as Symbol, and its factories in April 2021. The acquisition of Symbol’s six factories gave Corsicana a total of 16 factories at the time of the acquisition. Corsicana said in its news release Thursday it now has 10 factories.

Corsicana was founded in the Texan city of the same name in 1971.

Eastern Sleep was founded in Richmond in 1961, according to a Richmond Times-Dispatch report.

In addition to Symbol, Corsicana owns other brands such as Nightsbridge and Luuf Beds, according to its website.
