Perfect fit: Gregory takes over at Breckenridge - The Morning Sun

bontereng.blogspot.com

Isaac Gregory is Breckenridge football.

He embodies it.

He breathes it.

He lives it.

He loves it.

Earlier this spring Gregory was named the new head football coach at Breckenridge High School, replacing Kris Robinson who stepped down last winter.

Gregory is the perfect fit for the job too and here’s why.

First off he’s a Breckenridge graduate (2012) and former standout player in his own right, earning All-State honors at middle linebacker back in the day.

Secondly, he had been an assistant football coach at Breckenridge for the past seven years now and helped lead the Huskies to tons of success.  As defensive coordinator the Huskies have posted 27 shutouts since joining the MSAC in 2016 all while going 29-0 in conference play en route to six-straight MSAC titles. His 2018 defense posted nine shutouts and advanced to the D8 state championship game too.

Thirdly, Gregory grew up around the program as his father Mark Gregory was an assistant coach and head coach at Breckenridge decades ago.

In short Isaac Gregory has been around the program all his life and now he’s leading it.

“There’s no place like home and no place I’d rather be,” said Gregory. “Breckenridge (football) is all I’ve ever known so it’s great to be staying with the program.”

There will be one big change this season though as the Huskies will no longer be playing 11-man football. Rather they are making the transition to 8-man football this fall which is a huge change unto itself. That being said the Huskies won’t be re-inventing the wheel this fall via drastic changes to the offense or defense.  The system they have in place is consistent from the youth teams on up to the varsity team, thus there’s no need to re-invention.

The Huskies are also moving conferences this fall after a six-year run in the MSAC. They will now be playing in the newly-formed Central Michigan 8 Man League, a 10-team league that includes Breckenridge, Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart Academy, Montabella, Coleman, Vestaburg, Merrill, Fulton, Webberville, Morrice and Portland St. Pat’s.

Since taking over Gregory has been super busy putting together his assistant coaching staff and working on the transition to 8-man. Moreover, he also works full time and is raising a family.

“There’s not a lot of extra time,” joked Gregory. “Our community has been very supportive and that’s a real relief. I’m excited and I think the kids are excited too.”
