It’s no secret Brian Cashman will spend the offseason mulling his options at shortstop, with the New York Yankees moving Gleyber Torres back to second base.

And the general manager has a bumper crop of free-agent shortstops to consider signing this winter: Los Angeles Dodgers’ Corey Seager, Colorado Rockies’ Trevor Story, Houston Astros’ Carlos Correa, Toronto Blue Jays’ Marcus Semien and New York Mets’ Javier Baez.
All four are expected to command nine-figure salaries on the open market. And it’s no sure thing that Cashman is willing to spend big on a shortstop, especially with prospects Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza down on the farm.
But if Cashman is willing to spend big, The New York Post’s Joel Sherman knows who the Yankees should target.
The Yankees made a July trade-deadline push for Baez. But I think they saw him as a short-term answer for their defensive nightmare at shortstop. The hatred for the 2017 Astros sign-stealing scandal still pulses in the Yankees’ organization — within which many harbor the belief that if Houston had not cheated, the Yanks would have won it all. So, I just can’t believe they would swallow that to sign Correa. There seems to have been a steady falling out of love with Story. I believe if the Yankees were going to play big for a shortstop, it would be Seager or Semien.

Sherman then goes on to explain why Seager is a better fit for the Yankees.
Seager is lefty. He has power. ... (He) has played in a big market with expectations, and (if it matters) Seager’s dad is from upstate New York and he has lots of family sprinkled in the metropolitan area. More important: Seager is known for his seriousness about baseball and for being excellent at blocking out distractions.
If the Yankees are serious about signing Seager, owner Hal Steinbrenner will have to open his wallet. Before the 2021 season, the San Diego Padres signed Fernando Tatis Jr. to a 14-year, $340 million deal and the Mets gave Francisco Lindor a 10-year, $341 million contract.
