Where Disney World’s 50th anniversary attractions could fit at Disneyland - OCRegister

bontereng.blogspot.com

Walt Disney World is getting ready to kick off an 18-month party to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Florida theme park resort with a host of new attractions, nighttime spectaculars, themed hotels and restaurants that could eventually show up at Disneyland.

Disney World is preparing to launch three rides, four shows, a Star Wars hotel and space-themed restaurant as part of a golden anniversary celebration that could eventually find a home at the Disneyland resort.

Disney has not announced plans to ship any of the 50th anniversary bounty west, but the Mouse loves to repurpose and reuse ride, show, hotel and restaurant concepts to take the most bites possible from any chunk of cheese.

Disney World has a lot of projects in the works at the four Florida theme parks — with half of them ready for the start of the 50th anniversary on Oct. 1 and the other half expected to open over the next year or so.

Let’s take a closer look at each Disney World project and where they could fit at Disneyland, Disney California Adventure and a proposed third theme park at the Anaheim theme park resort.

Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure

Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure is the marquee new attraction coming to the France pavilion in Epcot’s World Showcase for the 50th anniversary.

The new trackless dark ride will be a copy of the $150 million Remy’s Totally Zany Adventure attraction at the Disneyland Paris resort.

Shrunk to the size of a rat, visitors navigate around giant food props and towering kitchen utensils as they explore Paris from the point of view of the 2007 film’s rodent protagonist. In a number of scenes, riders see 3-D images projected on giant domed screens.

The new ride officially debuts at Epcot on Oct. 1 with employee and passholder soft opening previews already underway.

Making a copy of an existing ride saves on research and development costs. That’s why Disney built identical versions of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge on both coasts and is transplanting Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway from Disney’s Hollywood Studios to Disneyland’s Toontown.

The first two versions of the Remy ride went into Parisian themed locations that fit the locale of the animated movie. A third version of the Ratatouille dark ride based on the 2007 Pixar movie could be a natural fit for Pixar Pier at Disney California Adventure.

Early Pixar Pier concept art featured a Pixar Pals Theater marquee amid the row of shops along the boardwalk. The theater would have been built behind the Incredicoaster next to Toy Story Midway Mania. That unused space behind the Incredicoaster could be big enough for a West Coast version of Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure.

A duplicate of Le Creperie de Paris that’s part of the Ratatouille expansion at Epcot could add another dining option to DCA’s Pixar Pier.

Harmonious nighttime spectacular

Epcot will also launch a new nighttime spectacular in the World Showcase Lagoon on Oct. 1 for the 50th anniversary as a replacement for the long-running “Illuminations” show created as part of the Disney World millennium celebration.

Billed as the largest nighttime spectacular ever created for a Disney park, the new “Harmonious” show will celebrate how Disney music inspires people around the globe. The fireworks and laser show will feature massive floating set pieces, LED panels and choreographed fountain displays.

Disneyland already has “Fantasmic” while DCA boasts “World of Color” — two popular nighttime spectaculars that have yet to return following the coronavirus closures of the parks.

“Harmonious” could easily play a central role in the DisneylandForward project that envisions a third theme park on the west side of the resort and an eastside outdoor mall. Concept art of the west side theme park site shows a central mountain surrounded by water and the east side retail site features a central lagoon rimmed by shops.

You can be certain a nighttime spectacular is on the drawing board anytime you see a large body of water in Disney theme park plans.

KiteTails daytime show

The new “KiteTails” daytime show coming to the Discovery River Amphitheater at Disney’s Animal Kingdom will combine kites and wind catchers pulled by personal watercraft with puppets of lions, zebras and birds on shore.

The “KiteTails” show debuting Oct. 1 during the 50th anniversary celebration will feature kites of Simba, Baloo, Zazu and King Louie paired with a Disney soundtrack.

Any Disneyland, DCA or third gate body of water could provide the perfect venue for a West Coast version of “KiteTails.”

DCA’s Paradise Bay would be the least likely candidate for such a show — since the Jet Ski-like vehicles would not mix well with the hundreds of fountains in the manmade lake.

Disneyland’s Rivers of America has similar obstacles with the “Fantasmic” fountains, but the nighttime show did once feature a Jet Ski version of Flotsam and Jetsam — Ursula’s evil eels from “Little Mermaid.”

The best bet for any California version of “KiteTails” would likely be the big bays of water envisioned for the DisneylandForward theme park expansion and retail area.

Enchantment fireworks show

The Magic Kingdom’s Cinderella Castle will be the centerpiece of the new “Enchantment” fireworks show coming to the Florida theme park Oct. 1 for the 50th anniversary.

“Enchantment” will bring projection effects to the East Coast building facades of Main Street U.S.A. for the first time — something Disneyland fireworks shows have done for years.

For every Disney special effect that moves east, there’s an equal amount of pixie dust that floats west. Disneyland brought back the pre-pandemic “Mickey’s Mix Magic” and eventually could be looking to roll out a new fireworks show with the latest technology deployed in the new castle-centric spectacular at the Magic Kingdom.

Disneyland fans should keep an eye on the skies during “Enchantment” for any new magic that could be coming to Sleeping Beauty Castle.

Epcot’s new Space 220 will be as much an attraction as a restaurant. (Disney)

Space 220 restaurant

Epcot’s new Space 220 will be as much an attraction as a restaurant when the out-of-this-world eatery opens Sept. 20 just in time for the 50th anniversary celebration.

The culinary experience will take diners to a space station hovering 220 miles above Epcot’s expanded Mission: Space pavilion. Diners will board a hovercraft spacecraft where they can eat and drink among the stars with celestial daytime and nighttime panoramic views of planet Earth courtesy of “viewport” video screens. The experience begins before diners even reach the restaurant aboard a space elevator where Disney World quickly disappears as they ascend.

Disneyland’s Tomorrowland could be the perfect spot for another Space 220 restaurant. Star Wars Launch Bay has been a placeholder attraction at best and a giant waste of space at worst for several years now. How great would it be to turn the exposition hall into a spacecraft restaurant hovering far above the stratosphere?

Walt Disney Imagineering has struggled to figure out what to do with the former Carousel of Progress/America Sings/Innoventions building that has long been Disneyland’s white elephant. What better use for a constantly rotating building than as a spinning space station that doubles as an intergalactic eatery?

Launch Bay is likely far too large for any restaurant to occupy the entire location. There are plenty of unused and under-used spots in Tomorrowland that could be a better fit for a restaurant — including the former Starcade video arcade temporarily serving as a Magic Key lounge, Tomorrowland Theater sitting unused since the park reopened and the rarely used Star Tours auxiliary indoor queue.

A lightsaber skills training experience will be offered at the new Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser hotel under construction at Walt Disney World. (Disney)

Galactic Starcruiser hotel

The highly anticipated Galactic Starcruiser hotel next to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is set to open in spring 2022 during the 50th anniversary celebration.

The Star Wars starship hotel will draw upon Disney’s theme park and cruise ship experience as well as Walt Disney Imagineering’s next-gen technology to create a first-of-its-kind immersive storytelling experience.

The experiential voyage begins as soon as guests step into the starship-themed hotel and leave the real world behind. Stars and planets will hover in virtual windows as spaceships fly past and visitors don Jedi robes to join the rebel resistance — all in support of a continuously evolving story that unfolds over multiple days and nights.

If the Galactic Starcruiser proves popular — and all signs point to the high-end hotel becoming an instant success — then it could make financial sense for Disney to build another Star Wars hotel at Batuu West. The pricey Star Wars hotel will start at roughly $5,000 per room for a two-night stay.

There’s quite a bit of unused space at Disneyland between Rise of the Resistance and the Hungry Bear restaurant that could serve as the perfect spaceport for the Starship Halcyon.

A new and updated “Finding Nemo” musical at Disney’s Animal Kingdom will reopen in 2022. (Disney)

‘Finding Nemo’ musical

Disney World has announced plans to create a new and updated “Finding Nemo” musical at Disney’s Animal Kingdom that will reopen in 2022. That could be good news for Disneyland fans missing their Broadway musical fix.

Disney California Adventure needs a new tenant for the Hyperion Theater after shuttering the “Frozen Live” musical during the pandemic and laying off the cast.

The easiest path for DCA would be to bring a Broadway-style musical from another Disney theme park to Anaheim. A brand new “Finding Nemo” musical would be a top contender — especially if the costs to develop the show could be split between Disney World and Disneyland. The original 40-minute live puppet show wowed Florida audiences for more than a decade.

The Tron Lightcycle Power Run is coming in 2021 to the Magic Kingdom in Florida. (Disney)

Tron Lightcycle Power Run

Disney announced during the D23 Expo in 2017 that a clone of Tron Lightcycle Power Run at Shanghai Disneyland would be coming to the Magic Kingdom in 2021 as part of the 50th anniversary celebration.

The COVID-19 pandemic pushed back the opening date, but the new Tron coaster is undergoing on-track testing at the Magic Kingdom with a 2022 debut anticipated but not yet confirmed.

Imagineering has already put Power Run on the drawing board for any Disney theme park expansion in Anaheim. The DisneylandForward website says the proposed theme park expansion could “take cues” from the Tron coasters in China and Florida.

Disneyland fans have long been salivating at the thought of a Tron coaster in Tomorrowland — another obvious possible location. Adding a Lightcycle ride in Tomorrowland would likely mean something would have to go — with Launch Bay and Autopia the likely candidates.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind

Cosmic Rewind is another roller coaster initially planned for 2021 and the 50th anniversary that got pushed back by pandemic delays and cost cutting.

Construction is well underway on the massive new Epcot ride that promises to be one of the longest indoor coasters in the world.

The Guardians of the Galaxy storytelling coaster will feature a reverse launch and train cars that rotate 360 degrees — allowing Disney Imagineers to focus riders on the action.

Any Marvel-themed ride would have to go into DCA’s Avengers Campus — which already has Guardians of the Galaxy — Mission: Breakout. The innovative storytelling coaster could be rethemed to another Marvel character — with the leading candidate being Iron Man, who already has a ride at Hong Kong Disneyland and another in the works at Disneyland Paris.
