KALAMAZOO, MI – A Kalamazoo factory was burning hazardous waste and is facing violations from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy.
Wright Coating Technologies, 1603 N. Pitcher St., was burning used paint filters in ovens at the facility, an EGLE news release said. They are facing three violations from EGLE.
Wright sent a written response to EGLE Aug. 10 and said they were no longer burning used filters, the release said.
By burning the hazardous waste, Wright violated air and waste rules, the release said. The factory became subject to the National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants from Hazardous Waste Combustors.
Violations were issued June 29, July 14 and Aug. 25.
In addition to burning the filters, the other violations Wright faces include a failure to submit a startup shutdown malfunction plan, failure to develop and implement a training program for certified operators and not performing and recording weekly waste inspections.
EGLE is waiting for more written responses from Wright after the Aug. 25 violation notice, the release said. At that time, EGLE will evaluate if further action is needed, including any potential penalties.
Wright is a special coatings operator that coats things such as office equipment, fitness equipment and appliances, per the company’s website.
