The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy confirmed on Friday that the source of flammable vapors was a fuel leak at the Ford Flatlock assembly plant.
“HAZMAT technicians begin reducing flammable vapors in urban sanitation systems by injecting fire protection foam. These activities detect benzene levels 4 square miles around Flatlock. It takes place in many different places, “said the agency.

Wayne County Executive Warren C. Evans first declared a state of emergency in Flatrock on Thursday. Governor Gretchen Whitmer then declared an emergency in Flatrock and Wayne and Monroe counties that night.
