Iowa Football connected with Tommy McIntosh a few weeks ago. The DeWitt (MI) High junior knew of the program and school but wanted to research them more. When the Hawkeyes offered him a scholarship last week, he looked even closer.
"I didn't know a whole lot about Iowa initially, but as I do more research everything looks great," McIntosh told HN. "They have great academics to go along with a great football team. I hope to get on campus and be able to see it first hand."
Michigan's high school football experienced multiple pauses during its 2020-21 season. Despite the delays, McIntosh's stellar junior campaign opened the eyes of college scouts.
In addition to Iowa, he's added scholarship offers from Wake Forest, Wisconsin, Indiana, Vanderbilt, Cincinnati and others since February. DeWitt won the state championship in January.
The 6-foot-5, 200-pound McIntosh projects as a tight end for the Hawkeyes. He plays receiver in high school, which is where current Iowa starter Sam LaPorta lined up as a prep, as did his predecessor, Mackey Award winner, TJ Hockenson.
"My skill set fits their offensive scheme because they like having athletic tight ends that can be weapons in the pass game to go along with blocking. I feel I have a great combination of both, and can cause matchup problems for opposing defenses," McIntosh said.
Hawkeye offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz, who also coaches tight ends, and recruiting director Tyler Barnes are leading the program's pursuit of McIntosh.
"The relationship is great. They feel I can contribute in the pass game as a tight end early and help boost their offense. They're both really great coaches and that's evident by their success that they've had at the tight end position," he said.
The recruiting dead period that began last March at the beginning of the pandemic was scheduled to be lifted June 1. It's kept high school prospects from meeting in person with college coaches and prohibited guided campus tours.
"I really just want to get on campus and see what the school is all about. It's hard to judge a school based on pictures and research. You really have to see it in person to get a true feel for it. I hope to visit unofficially in May some time and check it out," McIntosh said.
Harvard, Yale, Princeton and other Ivy League schools have offered him. Academics will play a big role in his college decision.
"I'm going to study Business, but I haven't decided anything more specific yet," he said.
With 22 scholarship offers to date, McIntosh is working through his opportunities.
"Nobody is really standing out. I'm keeping my options open and trying to find the best fit for me," he said.
McIntosh caught 34 passes for 781 yards and 14 touchdowns during his junior campaign. As a safety, he intercepted four passes and defended four more.
Rivals and 247 rank him as a three-star recruit. The latter shows him as the 107th best receiver nationally in the 2022 class and the No. 18 player overall in Michigan for the cycle.
