A large fire caused extensive damage to a textile manufacturing facility in Portland early Monday morning, officials said.
The first reports of the blaze came in around 3:30 a.m. at a commercial building in the 400 block of Southeast 79th Avenue, said Lt. Liz Thompson, a spokeswoman for Portland Fire & Rescue.
The first firefighters on the scene saw flames coming from the second story of the building and quickly made their way inside to fight the blaze, Thompson said.
They soon saw signs that the roof was becoming unstable, though, and had to pull back and fight the fire from the exterior before the roof partially collapsed.
The building is home to the Portland Garment Factory, a small textile manufacturing business that changed course and began making masks in early 2020 when the coronavirus pandemic first took hold.
A nearby apartment building was evacuated, Thompson said, and the Red Cross was assisting those residents in finding accommodations.
Fire officials said they were mopping up the fire around 7 a.m.
At its peak, more than 70 firefighters were battling the blaze. No injuries were reported, and the cause was under investigation. Fire officials asked any witnesses with information to call 503-823-INFO.
Several streets in the immediate vicinity were closed Monday morning.
