EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.  — Myles Garrett revealed that he had coughing fit in the locker room, and he coughed his way through his post-game Zoom conference.

On the way to a 20-6 victory over the Giants that improved the Browns to 10-4, Garrett continued to battle the aftereffects of COVID-19, which cost him two games and probably his hopes for the NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award.

“I’m just getting over a coughing fit in the locker room earlier and trying to get some water in my system, be able to breathe,” Garrett said. “Taking those big breaths are tough.’'

The NBC Sunday Night cameras showed Garrett struggling to catch his breath at times on the field. He admitted on Friday that he’s still doing breathing treatments and trying to recover from the virus that he said “kicked my butt.’'

“I’m just getting choked up,’' he said. “You’ve got to find a way. It’s about desire. No matter how I feel, I’ve got to do something on the field and when I get off of it, maybe go see someone. Hopefully if we make it to the playoffs, I’ll try to get myself as close to 100% [healthy] as possible.”

Practicing and playing stirs up his cough, but he’s determined to do everything he can to help the team not only get to the playoffs but keep winning.

“It’s known to affect your lungs, and I need those to be out there and give my full effort,” he said. “It’s hard to want to make a move or do something that you know is going to expend a lot of energy, knowing that you’ll have to do it the next play and the next play. Sometimes it kind of throws off what I’m doing. But I’ve just got to go out there and make it happen, and today we did.’'

Garrett was eyeing the five sacks and three forced fumbles that Arizona’s Haasan Reddick had last week against the Giants, but he managed only half a sack on Colt McCoy— on the second-last play of the game. It was enough to move into fourth place all alone on the NFL’s sack list with 11, but not the monster game he hoped to have.

“It is tough,’' he said. “I try not to think about it during the game. I just try to make sure I get as much oxygen as I can in and keep rolling.”
