The Boston Celtics are in the running to acquire James Harden in a deal, but Bleacher Report believes he wouldn’t be a good fit next to Jayson Tatum.
Last season, things became very clear in the Boston Celtics pecking order: Jayson Tatum is the lead dog in Beantown. That hierarchy doesn’t figure to be threatened by Kemba Walker when he comes back, and Jaylen Brown could play himself into a 1A role if his trajectory continues to soar upwards.
At the end of games, though, Tatum is the man that needs the ball in his hands. He proved as much with what would turn out to be the game-winning 3-pointer against the Milwaukee Bucks on opening night–of course because of two critical missed free throws by super-max signer Giannis Antetokounmpo.
A potential James Harden trade, which has been rumored for a while, would threaten that dynamic. As Bleacher Report’s Theo Salaun pointed out, that could be a huge hurdle to the Cs ultimately landing the “Beard”:
Aside from the 76ers, the Celtics have the most obvious package for a Harden trade. If Houston wants an upsurging young player to complement draft picks (and can’t pry away Ben Simmons), 24-year-old Jaylen Brown is the next best thing.
But, while a package centered around Brown and picks could get a deal done, it may not be in Boston’s best interests. At just 22 years old, Jayson Tatum is already looking like a franchise cornerstone, and the Celtics will want to find out if he can step into dominance as a first option on offense.
While the Cs are a team that has been thrown into the ring to potentially land Harden, it doesn’t seem like there is an exact trade that could scratch both sides’ itches. Jaylen Brown need not be included in any trade package, and the alternate trade packages may not get a deal done before a different team swoops in.
So, while we wait with bated breath on the team making a move…maybe hold off on imagining Harden in green and white, especially if the team wins against Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets this afternoon.
