Taoyuan, Dec. 21 (CNA) A Filipino migrant worker who sustained severe burns in a fire at a pharmaceutical factory in Taoyuan on Sunday has died of his injuries, a company spokesman said Monday.
The employee suffered third-degree burns over 90 percent of his body in the fire, which started around noon Sunday at the five-story factory of Sci Pharmtech Inc. in Taoyuan, spokesman Yang Wen-chen (楊文禎) said at a news conference.
On Monday the Filipino worker died, while another employee, a Taiwanese man, was discharged from hospital after being treated for burns to his hand, Yang said.
The two workers were injured when the blaze started during the processing of a chemical solution, Yang said.
He said the company has been in contact with the family of the Philippine victim and will do its best to offer them compensation.
Meanwhile, as a result of the fire, the company will lose an estimated NT$600 million (US$21.3 million) worth of orders in the first quarter next year, but it has in stock about NT$250 million in finished products that will be assessed to see whether they meet sales quality, he said.
According to Yang, domestic sales account for only 3 percent of the company's overall revenue, while most of its clients are overseas.
The Sci Pharmtech factory in Taoyuan's Luzhu's District employs about 270 workers, who will all be paid in full up to Lunar New Year next February, after which the situation will be assessed, he said.
The production lines have been suspended, and the company will evaluate whether an employee furlough will be necessary, Yang added.
The fire caused roughly NT$800 million in property damage and losses, which are covered by the factory's fire insurance, he said. It will take at least six months to rebuild the factory production facilities, if the main structure of the building remains intact, he added.
The fire also jumped to five nearby factories due to the windy conditions in the area and as the chemical solution flowed into nearby drains, according to Yang.
As of Monday morning, the fire was still burning but was expected to be brought under control by afternoon, according to Taoyuan firefighters.
