JCFD Deputy Chief, 9-11 Responder Remembered in Memorial Fit for a Hero - TAPinto.net

JERSEY CITY, NJ - Members of the Jersey City Fire Department, as well as his family, gathered Sunday to pay tribute to former Deputy Chief Tim Kearney who passed away from cancer on December 9.

Kearney, who joined the JCFD in 1972 and rose through the ranks before retiring as a deputy chief in 2010, is believed to have contracted the disease as a result of his response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.

While the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic prevented Kearney, whose heroic actions included saving a woman from a burning building a year before his retirement, as well as part of a team of firefighters that responded to the Mecca cold storage building near the Holland Tunnel in March 2001, from receiving the traditional funeral services of a firefighter lost in the line of duty, the small ceremony, held at the Farrier Statue in Lincoln Park, had the making of a commemoration of a hero.

Included in these were a procession through Jersey City, passing by Fire Headquarters and Fire Rescue, a ceremony with the Jersey City Firefighters Emerald Society Pipes & Drums paying tribute to their former member, and the presentation of an American flag to Deputy Chief Kearney’s family.

Born in Jersey City, Kearney, known for occasionally sending letters to the local newspaper when he spotted something amiss, graduated from Snyder High School and later what was then Jersey City State College. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1970-1975.

Deputy Chief Kearney is survived by his wife and three sons.
