Photo by Junius Stone / Texarkana Gazette.TEXARKANA, Texas — A seat fit for a Texas-size king has taken its place in front of Sling Blades Axe Throwing Co in Oaklawn Plaza. Standing 10 feet tall and six feet wide, the platform is big enough to stand on and made for photo opportunities.
"The throne was built by B&H Custom Gift Services, a local artisan," said Kevin Hancock, co-owner of Sling Blades (the other owner is his wife, Toni). "Every other axe throwing place has a chair inside for pictures. In Texas, we go big, so we set up this throne outside the place."
Sling Blades is still coming together, with new features being added all the time. Axe throwers who score a bullseye get their picture put on a wall of fame.
\Their axes are hand made by three different companies from various places in the United States.
"We also have our signature wall, which all customers can sign," said Hancock. "We've only been open a month or so, but already, we've had many, many people come out and visit us. Our timing was impeccable, opening up on the last Friday the 13th in the year 2020. But we figured, get the negative out of the way early and take a leap of faith."
It has worked out so far, he said.
"Besides this being a cool thing to do, folks are a bit tired of being cooped up at this point," he said. "They want to get out and do stuff."
