CHICO — One structure was destroyed after a vegetation fire started Saturday afternoon at the former Diamond Match factory site in the area of W. 16th and Chestnut streets.
The fire was contained at one acre, said John Kelso, battalion chief of the Chico Fire Department.
The structure that burned was an old maintenance shed that no one had been living in. Kelso said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The fire was called in by the property caretaker at 10:55 a.m. and had appeared to be burning for a while, Kelso said. The Butte County Fire Department was the first to arrive on the scene.
Though there was a slight breeze Saturday, Kelso said the higher humidity levels kept the fire from possibly spreading into the nearby Barber neighborhood.
“Thankfully because of the weather conditions we have today and we were able to get out here, we’re familiar with this property we could get here quick and get the initial stop done,” Kelso said. “Certainly with these southwest winds, if they were stronger and we didn’t have the humidity levels the way they were it would have pushed it into that Barber neighborhood. We are so happy that the humidity levels are up. I wish it would just dump a bunch of rain right now.”
Kelso also mentioned that even though the weather is getting cooler, there’s still a high risk when it comes to fires.
“Even though trees are green, and we’re in fall and it’s cold at night, these fuels are extremely dry,” Kelso said. “It’ll be a threat well into wintertime until we get sustained rain. We need to continue being cautious going into the fall and winter.”
