Donald Trump has made unfounded claims that Joe Biden is in the midst of mental decline one of the pillars of his 2020 campaign. But that has only focused attention on the state of his own cognitive abilities. Not to worry! Speaking to Sean Hannity Thursday night, the president assured Americans his brain is just fine—in fact, he bragged to the Fox News host, he just recently “aced” a cognitive test, much to the surprise of the doctors who administered it.
Claiming his Democratic opponent “couldn’t pass” a cognitive test, Trump announced that he “actually took one” recently at Walter Reed amid questions from the “radical left” about his mental state. “I aced it. I aced the test,” Trump said. “[Doctors] were very surprised. They said, ‘That’s an unbelievable thing. Rarely does anybody do what you just did.’”
It’s odd to boast about acing a test that may have amounted to identifying animals in pictures and drawing a clock, but more curious still to brag that doctors were stunned he could pass. And yet, this is not the first time he’s taken such a victory lap. In 2018, amid similar questions about his mental fitness, he famously praised himself on Twitter as a “stable genius.” After taking the Montreal Cognitive Assessment as part of his physical, and scoring 30 out of 30 on the test that includes questions about the date and where you are on it, his son, Donald Trump Jr., celebrated the results on Twitter as “more #winning.” The president’s then-physician, Ronny Jackson, was similarly effusive about his mental acuity, saying Trump showed no evidence of cognitive impairment, calling him “very sharp” and “very articulate,” and praising him as a physical specimen. “He has incredibly good genes,” Jackson said of Trump at the time. “It’s just the way God made him.”
Such characterizations are somewhat dubious, as it’s hard to say that a man who suggests human lungs could be scrubbed with bleach has “no indication whatsoever” of some kind of issue. But Trump’s fitness might be viewed more sympathetically were it not for the fact that he and his surrogates have made it a point to suggest that Biden, 77, is unwell. Team Trump has seized on Biden’s every gaffe and misstatement to suggest he’s deteriorating, with the president saying last month that his opponent “can’t speak” and on Thursday suggesting that the “confused” former vice president was trying to get out of debating him. But Biden has made clear he’s willing to put his brain up against Trump’s. Asked about his cognitive abilities earlier this month, Biden said that his capabilities are “constantly tested” by his work. “All you've got to do is watch me,” he said. “I can hardly wait to compare my cognitive capability to the cognitive capability of the man I'm running against.”
