STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A man accused of setting a fire in a Macy’s dressing room at the Staten Island Mall last year has been found mentally fit to stand trial.

A court-ordered psychiatric exam determined Brian Pierre understands the charges against him and can aid in his defense.

The findings were disclosed at a conference Monday in state Supreme Court, St. George.

Authorities allege Pierre, then 22, lit up newspaper and clothing inside a first-floor dressing room at about 2:15 p.m. on Feb. 16, 2019.

The blaze damaged the dressing-room wall and some clothes, a police spokesperson previously told the Advance.

Three days later on Feb. 19, police released Pierre’s photo and sought the public’s help in finding him.

As it turned out, two cops on the Staten Island Ferry saw the defendant on the boat and recognized him from the wanted poster, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation.

Fire marshals busted him on Feb. 22, and the Fire Department announced the arrest on Twitter.

Authorities said Pierre was homeless.

The defendant was indicted on a felony count of third-degree burglary. He’s also accused of misdemeanor counts of criminal mischief and petit larceny.

Police said the burglary and the petit larceny charges stem from the clothing that was burned.

Pierre has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

His next court date is Aug. 4; the defendant remains free on his own recognizance.

His lawyer did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment on the case.
